It's been quite the journey with this little girl this past month. In November we started suspecting that she had a hard time hearing, and so in December before Christmas we got her into an ENT. They confirmed our suspicions when she failed both her hearing tests. The doctor recommended tubes. I had them a couple times when I was 5 and so I knew what they were all about and was ok with that. Beginning of January we made the early morning trip into Spokane to get her tubes.
We had been talking about it for awhile so she knew what was going on. We told her they were going to fix her ears. I had talked to the nurses and so I knew what to expect it was quite unerving knowing what it would all entail. We left Sami with a friend and took Daphne and Ezra into Spokane. They had her change and she loved the socks she got than they gave her a warm blanket to cuddle in while we waited. She colored and we talked to her.
The surgery took about 15 min or so and she did well. We went into the recovery area and the nurse was holding her, she was still out from the medicine. She handed her over to me and I held my sleeping little girl so glad that she was ok, and so grateful that her life would be better from here on out. We got her dressed and carried her out to the van. She slept the whole way home and napped that afternoon. she was fine. There was some dried blood in her ears but i was told to put drops in her ears and found out that it would have to be done in the night after she had fallen asleep.
Here she is fallen asleep on a book in her bed, covering her ear because I just put drops in, and she felt it. Her behavior has improved and she talks a whole lot more. We still can't understand most of it but I found out the elementary school that Sami attends takes kids at 3 for preschool. It would be 2 days a week and they would give her speech therapy and she would be able to gain back some of the skills she missed out on. I have a friend who has a son with SPD and so she has learned quite a bit about kids that are behind, and she said with Daphne that she acts like a 1 1/2 year old because she has missed out on stuff not being able to hear. It has been quite difficult and I completely agree with her. Daphne doesn't sit still, it's getting better, but for her to sit still she has to have something to distract her. She has a hard time paying attention. In primary she won't sit during Sharing time or singing time but she goes to class just fine... the bigger surroundings with the person in charge not right by her, is hard... most sundays I go in and sit with her for a bit, but than if she can't stay sitting still than she goes in the hall with me until the next hour starts. if I let her she would go in and out the whole hour...
She does a lot on her own and is very independent, doesn't like for us to be right there like Sami does... she comes and tells us when she needs something and when her sister doesn't do something she does it for her. She refuses to potty train, and so I am giving her time to adjust to her ears... i am not a forcer and I think it's mean to force a kid to potty train... what's another couple of months gonna do... whatever. When i ask her she yells at me NO!
She wants to be a baby still and tells me she isn't a big girl... so it's a process for sure...
On tuesdays and Thursdays when Sami is at class we go run errands together and she is so good for me, we have a great time... I love this little beauty!
She sure is a handful, and I am assuming it will be awhile before she starts obeying a bit more and decides she wants to grow up! In the mean time we are just enjoying her the way she is!

She is such a cutie! Avery has been going to the speech therapist at Hawthorne this school year. It's only 20 minutes a week, but still funny that she's "attending" elementary school before Tate =) We took her to a dr. who tested her hearing this month and it's fine, so her speech issue is something different. Anyway, I didn't know this about Daphne. Thanks for sharing. Glad things are looking up for her!
