Ezra Jeffrey Mason

Well... so Tuesday May 29, my mom picked up the girls and i spent the afternoon cleaning so that when we came home the house was clean, which makes you feel so much better. We didn't know exactly how it was going to play out whether we would be going getting induced and coming home or staying, so we wanted to be prepared.
It took me 2 hours to clean my room, the girls room and Ezra's room than I moved on to packing bags and writing in my journal. At 5 pm me and Dave left the house and headed to Subway for dinner. Doctor told me I could eat but to eat something light, so I wanted soup, Subway isn't cool like Quizno's where they always have soup and so we ended up eating dinner at Safeway... I was pretty hungry. Yummy baked potato soup. Than we got some snacks and drinks for Dave and went to Bi-Mart to buy a disposable camera with a flash since we haven't found our charger yet... when that camera is full I will get them developed and have them all ready for his baby book, and I will show you those as well. We will take some of the girls with that as well.

We got to the hospital Deaconess Medical Center around 6:30 and it took us a bit to figure out the right place to park. We went to the Ob floor and signed in and were escorted to our room. I was told, put your clothes in this bag, change into this and the nurse will be right in, at this point I am thinking, I think i am staying.

Ok, I haven't taken a picture of myself in awhile... but here ya go... a big baby in there! And my belly button was on it's way completely out!

Our first nurse Laura came in and got her computer on track and asked me what I thought was happening tonight and than assured me that I was staying not going home. That was a thought I figured well than by morning I will have a baby, gotta just get through the night... easier said than done, I'll say. Shift change was at 7:30 and so Michelle took over, and let me just tell you she was the best nurse I have ever had. I forget the times that everything happened at, they checked me since when they put a contraction monitor on my belly I was already contracting, so they checked me and I was already dilated to a 3. Whoo HOO! I had been having contractions around 4pm so I knew I was already in labor, but I am pretty happy with myself that I got to a 3 with out meds... it's never happened before. SO they scratched giving me cervidil and just let me do my own thing for a bit. Michelle convinced my doctor to put me on low dose pit to help it along. A couple hours later, the paper on my machine had run out and so I beeped the nurse. She came in and went into fast action. She had the fetal monitor and was trying to count baby heart beats, as I am trying to figure out what is going on, she tells me to quickly get on my hands and knees and hands me an oxygen mask... the baby was lying on his umbilical cord or something and his heart rate dropped. As I am on my hands and knees trying to take deep breaths among crying i told myself I know it's bad if they wheel me down to an OR room and give me a emergency C-section, but I didn't want that and so it wasn't as comforting as it could have been. With in minutes several nurses are in my room and they are all counting heartbeats... it's amazing what they can tell from the count of a heart beat. After about 15 min he was fine and I was fine and they left the room. I started crying and looked over at Dave. I was so scared... I asked him what he thought and he said that he noticed his heart rate had dropped way below the line and so he just sat back and let the nurses do there thing wishing there was something he could do, but knowing that I was ok. Poor Dave! Well they took me off the Pit when that started and waited a few hours before putting me back on. When they put me back on I was dilated to a 4 and so the epidural guy came in. After 4 tries he succeeded... And some very soothing medicine, I was so tense and shaky it didn't help his situation... once Michelle gave me this medicine it went right in and I was fine... Well the night continued where I slept and every hour was moved from one side to the other. It took forever to get me up and by 9 I was at a 7. After that the pain worsened and the button got pushed and around 11, preparation started. I pushed for what seemed like hours when really was only like an half hour or so, My cervix wasn't lined up correctly and so I had to hold my legs up myself... and they were heavy, and kept having to move from side to side and back to be in a  better pushing position. Finally he crowned and than he came out... he was purple/grey and yacking on amniotic fluid.. I kept telling them I don't think he's breathing but he was. Than after a few minutes they took him and cleaned him up and weighed him...
Dave sleeping through the night... snoring like crazy I might add!

He didn't cry much, the normal amount.. You could tell he was over cooked, his feet and hands were all crinkly and peeling and his face here looks like he slept on a pile of grass...

He looked tons better the next day. He figured out he wanted to eat and wanted to a lot more than I could give and so we got him going on the binkie for the ride home, which wasn't smart I figured out because that was all he wanted and didn't want to eat.

Tuesday after he was born was a blur... i hadn't eaten in 16 hours, and had thrown up a bunch before and after labor, and was in pain, of course, and my blood pressure was off and so I slept most of the afternoon and even did so with all there poking and prodding. Dave held Ezra most the time and took  naps with him, when I would hold him to feed him, I would instantly fall asleep and so Dave would have to take him back... by 5 I was feeling tons better and had some dinner the nurse ordered for me. By 8 they felt I was well enough to move to a recovery room and so they did. After we got down there Dave fell asleep and I nursed Ezra and changed his clothes. Around 10 a nurse came in ready to give him a bath and so I went with her. I couldn't keep my eyes open so I was really relieved when we went back to the room and Ezra slept and I slept until 6 am when he woke me up. I tried to feed him but he wasn't awake enough and so I decided I would change his diaper. I hadn't yet. As soon as I started I had wished Dave was helping me, it was a lot different than a girls diaper change and I was distressed. I started chucking stuff at Dave trying to wake him up to help me, there were nurses trying to get mine and Ezra's blood drawn and I was in the midst of changing a bum with a kid that was peeing all over and, still pooping. Finally Dave woke up and helped me finish and the techs came back.
He was wearing a cute guitar sleeper but peed that and so he was wearing his froggy sleeper grandma B gave him...

After a lot of people coming in and talking to us to discharge at 1:30 it finally happened. I got a fun ride, and Dave carried the baby down and most of our bags to the van and moved it to the curb to make it easier to pick me up. We loaded up and headed home.
When we got home we got comfortable and can't get enough of this adorable face... one of these days I will be able to catch some of his funny expressions to show you... he looks a lot like Daphne did when she was a baby, I keep saying... her, instead of him... it's a given since I have never had a boy til now!
Friday evening my dad and Andy brought the girls home and Friday afternoon me and Dave took a trip out to Indian Trail to see the pediatrician since Ezra wouldn't eat. He is a very stubborn kid and when he cries it sounds like dinosaur noises. I have to put him in his swaddle so his hands stay out of the way... but this morning my milk came in and when he got done eating he smiled really big... he went right to sleep. Now if I could only get my gigantic hobbit feet to go down life would be a lot easier. Me and Ezra were up most of the night eating... and so I will be taking lots of naps today, Dave is at my disposal until Monday when he goes back to school, and I have to trudge into Spokane to take Ezra for a check up, and the girls to get there ears looked at...

Well.. wish me luck as I embark on this new phase of a mother of 3, and a boy, he is so different already... it's gonna be a fun adjustment!

SOOO exciting! He's adorable. I'm glad things went well and that's he and you are doing so well and healthy!
You can do it, Sara! Some days will be harder than others, but your girls can help. =)
I cannot believe how huge he is!

Thanks for sharing your story. I love birth stories. It brings back some of the feelings of my own experiences. I'm so happy everyone is happy and healthy after that long labor with some drama. Ugh. But at least you got some recovery sleep. He is absolutely adorable!! I also enjoyed the diaper changing story =)
